I understand the sentiment of whoever picked these clips, but do not the level of formality in the dress of the speaker; W was in a collared shirt, BHO in a suit. The formality of the occasion may have affected the response. There is ample room for criticism of _both_ POTUSes, and I do maintain higher regard for one than the other. But I wouldn't oversell this particular clip. R, C
Smitty, I had the same observation initially- different setting.
But look at the Obama clip... the brass ARE applauding (faintly), and there is an applause period at the end that is THERE... but weak. So it wasn't out of place to clap... if you felt so disposed.
And tellingly, the CNN anchor said that the response struck many as "tepid"- this coming from CNN, mind you.
