Rock n Roll Oldies: Rolling Stones- 1969

The free concert in London's Hyde Park in 1969 was eagerly anticipated as the public debut of the Rolling Stones' freshly-recruited guitar virtuoso Mick Taylor, which it was- but unfortunately, the man he replaced -the talented, yet hapless Brian Jones- was found dead in his swimming pool two days earlier, casting a pall over the show as it became more a memorial event.

This live performance of the then-just-released single Honky Tonk Women is a real gem nonetheless, and the freshened lineup was a great boost to morale... due to drug abuse and personality flaws, Jones had become a major drag on the band's creative talents and performances.

The addition of 20-yr-old phenom Taylor from John Mayall and the Blues Breakers really brought Kieth Richards to life, as he prefers to collaborate onstage, and needed someone to jam with... and Jones just wasn't there anymore in 1967-68. You knew you had a problem when you're too drugged out for Kieth Richards in 1969, lol... but sadly Jones was just that.

As Mick Jagger was quoted as sayinig later, in the 80s: "We never before had a truly melodic guitar player before Mick Taylor... and we haven't since". To this day, Richards says he "never understood" why Taylor left... calling him "amazing".

However, it's a delight to watch the Mick Taylor playing lead guitar on stage with the Stones for the very first time here, especially to those of us that consider his 69-74 era the best incarnation of the band... myself surely included:

I'm sort of 'meh' when it comes to the Stones. They have a handful of songs I can deal with, the rest is flotsam.

RR,

I think the same as Red on the Stones but was extremely pleased when my brother offered me a free ticket to thier show at Ford Field here in Detroit a few years back.

Great show for 'old men' and have the bragging rights now to say I saw them live in concert.

Did I ever mention I can't stand the Rolling Stones. Like Red, they a very few songs I rather like. I never saw the appeal of Mick Jagger. I think he's repulsive to look at...

I'm the odd one out. I know this is about Mick Taylor, but I love Mick Jagger.

I like the Stones. This is a great video find, RR.
I can't believe it's over 40 years ago, and they are still
growing strong.....I thought they'd all be dead by now...
maybe they have formaldehyde in their veins.

Thanks for the blast from the past and have a fun weekend, all.

I have always been a stones fan....I remember (most of it) seeing Mick on a tower speaker at Folsom field in Boulder @ 1976 or so, singing Jumping Jack Flash, heh.

To each their own, my friends... as always, new band next week here!

And Randy... 1976 was a seriously great tour to catch, wow

PS- to the non-fans here, guitarist Mick Taylor agreed with you, actually.

Upon quitting the Stones in 1974, he told an interviewer that the first time he rehearsed with them -for the above concert- "I couldn't believe how bad they sounded, the timing was awful"

He said they sounded like a teenage garage band and he wondered to himself "how does this group possibly make hit records?"

But Keith Richards also agreed that they were just a garage band-- when asked about their undisciplined sound, he said "Yeah, but you can't make an SS regiment out of the Rolling Stones... we're a garage band"

But you know something... I like garage bands
