Rock-n-Roll Oldies: Billy Swan- I Can Help

Billy Swan (dob 12 May 1942) is a multi-talented American musician, songwriter and singer, best known for the 1974 #1 single I Can Help. Born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Swan learned drums, piano and guitar at a very young age, then immediately took to writing songs.

The first big break came in 1962 when Clyde McPhatter recorded Lover Please, a song written by Swan. McPhatter's version quickly became a #7 pop hit. Swan moved to Memphis and for a time worked on Elvis Presley's Graceland estate.

He then moved to Nashville, which enabled him to write hit country songs for numerous artists, including Conway Twitty, Waylon Jennings, and Mel Tillis. In 1969, Swan first took on the role of record producer, producing Tony Joe White's Top Ten hit Polk Salad Annie.

Billy Swan also played bass guitar for Kris Kristofferson, and then signed a solo recording deal with Monument Records. His first album included the song I Can Help, a rockabilly number that topped both the Billboard Hot 100 and country charts in 1974, going-on to become a major international hit.

Swan recorded it in two takes -without overdubs- with an RMI organ that Kristofferson and singer Rita Coolidge had bought for him as a wedding gift.

Here Billy and the band perform their then #1 hit on The Midnight Special... I've adored this tune since the day it hit the radio, and a great live version here, a little more honky-tonk... they didn't lip-synch on these, a feature unique to that show:

Sorry Charlie! Flipper Tanking in Florida Senate Race

Rubio (R) 40%    Crist (I) 28%    Meek (D) 23%

TEA Party favorite-son Marco Rubio continues to build on a lead first established just a few weeks ago... and in a Senate race that began with Crist out-front and with far more money.

But as the nation's rapidly-changing political climate worked against serial opportunist Crist, it's become apparent this unprincipled political chameleon picked the wrong time to flirt with Team Obama and the "progressive" Left.

Besides the fact Crist looks like a ruthless, power-addicted snake -which of course he is- the ill-advised liberal policies he's glommed-onto have now become political poison. With support imploding while the electorate in Florida -and most everywhere else- stampedes back to the right, a desperate Crist increasingly resorts to leftist-style scare tactics... and Rubio's tailights just keep getting smaller-

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, battered by rivals as a political opportunist, is losing ground in his quest to build a bipartisan voter coalition and win a U.S. Senate seat as an independent.

The latest attack came Wednesday in a new Democratic Party ad featuring clips of the ex-Republican, who is courting Democratic voters, praising George W. Bush and Sarah Palin and saying he is "about as conservative as you can get."

Mr. Crist had been leading the state's three-way Senate race in surveys taken after he abandoned his failing Republican primary campaign in April and switched to independent, presenting himself as a middle-of-the-road alternative to both parties. His campaign envisioned a formula of centrist Democrats, liberal Republicans and independents—a counterweight, strategists thought, to the tea-party movement boosting his chief competitor in the race, GOP nominee Marco Rubio.

But surveys now show Mr. Rubio, a former speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, taking the lead and Mr. Crist dropping into a battle for second place with Democratic nominee Kendrick Meek, a congressman from the Miami area. Mr. Rubio is ahead among independents and Mr. Meek is beating Mr. Crist among Democrats, according to a Mason-Dixon poll released over the weekend.

Stuxnet Hitting China Now

A most unwelcome visitor...

Breitbart:
A computer virus dubbed the world's "first cyber superweapon" by experts and which may have been designed to attack Iran's nuclear facilities has found a new target -- China.

The Stuxnet computer worm has wreaked havoc in China, infecting millions of computers around the country, state media reported this week. Stuxnet is feared by experts around the globe as it can break into computers that control machinery at the heart of industry, allowing an attacker to assume control of critical systems like pumps, motors, alarms and valves. It could, technically, make factory boilers explode, destroy gas pipelines or even cause a nuclear plant to malfunction.

The virus targets control systems made by German industrial giant Siemens commonly used to manage water supplies, oil rigs, power plants and other industrial facilities. "This malware is specially designed to sabotage plants and damage industrial systems, instead of stealing personal data," an engineer surnamed Wang at antivirus service provider Rising International Software told the Global Times. "Once Stuxnet successfully penetrates factory computers in China, those industries may collapse, which would damage China's national security," he added.

Another unnamed expert at Rising International said the attacks had so far infected more than six million individual accounts and nearly 1,000 corporate accounts around the country, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The Stuxnet computer worm -- a piece of malicious software (malware) which copies itself and sends itself on to other computers in a network -- was first publicly identified in June. It was found lurking on Siemens systems in India, Indonesia, Pakistan and elsewhere, but the heaviest infiltration appears to be in Iran, according to software security researchers.
Rumored origin of course is an Israeli-CIA collaboration of some sort. DebkaFile reported that Israel has had special elite units carrying out such assignments for some time. Three years ago, for instance, cyber raiders played a role in the destruction of the plutonium reactor North Korea was building at A-Zur in northern Syria. Now reportedly 3000 centrifuges are down at Nanantz... and these 7th-century savages had no idea what hit them... but they've started to figure it out

Israel is probably more than 10 years ahead of the Iranians in this field, and I doubt this is the last of it- not by a long shot. Cyberwarfare presents a battlefield of Israel's choosing: it's fairly deniable, and far preferable for a country smaller than Lake Michigan taking on Syria, Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas all at once... and with tepid US support.

Feds Radiating Americans? And What About the Vdara Death Ray?

A story hot on the internet today regards concerns that Federal authorties have been exposing US citizens to possibly dangerous radiation at x-ray machines placed at the entrance on airports through which one must pass before entering the facility, with the #1 Google Search today "Feds radiating Americans"- hard to conclude they're happy about it, lol. Now the rampant rumor is that the US government has purchase X-ray machines that can peer inside homes, cars, and clothing...

And it's not optional of course, all air travelers must pass though the current machines- so besides the civil liberties issues at stake, there's overriding health concerns from the X-rays.

But as for the new Vdara Hotel/Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada...

The Daily Mail (UK) reports today that some serious radiation has been coming down on guests frequenting the Vdara Hotel's luxurious pool area, due to a design flaw that reflects -and actually magnifies- the sun's rays and roasts guests/melts luggage, etc-  rutt-ro:

Guests at a new hotel in Las Vegas have complained of receiving severe burns from a 'death ray' of sunlight caused by the unique design of the building. Due to the concave shape of the Vdara hotel, the strong Nevada sun reflects off its all-glass front and directly onto sections of the swimming pool area below. The result has left some guests with burns from the powerful rays and even plastic bags have been recorded as melting in the heat.

Chicago attorney Bill Pintas felt the power of the dangerous ray first hand last week. 'It felt like I had a chemical burn. I couldn't imagine why my head was burning,' he said. 'Within 30 seconds, the back of my legs were burning. My first though was, 'Jesus, they destroyed the ozone layer!'

Gordon Absher, a spokesman for MGM Resorts, which owns the Vdara hotel, said they was aware of the issue and designers were working with resort staff to come up with a solution. In fact it is claimed that the designers foresaw the issue with the reflecting sun but thought they had solved it by installing a high-tech film on the south-facing panes of glass.

However, Mr Absher, conceded it had not been enough and some of the guests had suffered as a result. The Las Vegas Review Journal quotes one hotel employee as saying the building's design causes the sunshine to be diverted 'like a magnifying glass that shines down' over a space of about 10 by 15 feet as the poolside. And as the Earth rotates, the spot moves across the pool area...
