Gipper's Greatest Hits: Reagan Bombs Libya, April 14th, 1986

"...for us to ignore -by inaction- the slaughter of American citizens and American soldiers ... is simply
not in the American tradition.

When our citizens are abused or attacked -anywhere in the world- on the direct orders of a hostile regime, we will respond so long as I am in this Oval Office.

Self-defense is not only our right... it is our duty."

RR, a personal story. I was in Barcelona or Madrid Spain when this happened. I was at a Sales meeting. Things were so contentious world-wide that hubby didn't go with me. He stayed home with our son. They were very tense days.

I ordered breakfast to my room and the waiter came in and turned on the tv. He didn't speak English but said, Reagan, Gaddafi BOOM and he spread his arms out wide.

We were called to the lobby and told not to leave until arrangements were made to get us out of Spain. The International Airport was closed to everyone but our contingent of Americans who were in the country as guests of a well-known Spanish sparkling wine company. It was eering walking through that major airport without a sole there. The company escorted us to the plane - armed, and traveled with us. It was like something you see in a movie.

The good news was, we were taken to the Canary Islands. We were slated to go there anyway, but it gave us several extra days.

When I arrived back home I learned that one of my son's elementary school mates was Libyan. His grandparents lived close to the palace and died in the bombing.

As Randy says, we need this attitude now. What a difference a few ineffectual presidents and a few decades make.

Thanks Randy and WOW, that's something else, Maggie- nice ending in a nice place too!

You know, the problem today is that the US Left and many independents simply refuse to accept the proven concept of deterrence- note that you didn't hear a peep from Quaddafi for some years subsequent to the Reagan raid.

As RR famously said "of the four wars of my lifetime, none came about because the US was too strong"

Well, we've still got a lot of firepower... but if you enemy thinks you lack the will, what good is it, none. And of course Obama has failed every probing strategic and diplomatic test our enemies have laid on him so far.

Understandably, they already appear convinced this smiley, hollow-plastic mannequin isn't going to stand up to any of them... and they're probably right. Thus is lost the valuable, life-saving effect of US strategic deterrence.

Once when Reagan was asked if he'd have nuked North Vietnam to bring us victory, he said "No, I don't think it was needed... but I'd like the enemy to go to bed each and every night thinking that I might"

THAT's what I'm talking about

RR, as you indicate, the only way to stay safe is to stay strong. America's strength is used for good, never for evil. We certainly know what our enemies are thinking as they turn in for the night, and it is nothing for the good of anyone.
