1975: last year of Dodge Dart production prior to replacement by the ill-fated Dodge Aspen |
As the new Chrylser starts to hit it's stride, the resurgent company has now unveiled an all-new 2013 Dodge Dart at the Detroit International Auto Show with a fresh, clean look that still looks like a Mopar, sharing a number of muscular styling cues with its big-brother, the Dodge Charger...

Yes, it's a bit of a surprise to see the once-humble Dart headed back to American streets, but FIAT/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne (born/raised in Canada) is said to harbor an affection for American cars of the 60s/70s... thus his enthusiastic support for such traditional-style Chrysler products as 300, the Dodge Viper, Charger and (Hemi!) Challenger.
And while I'm no fan of the back-room-wheeling-dealing that lead to the FIAT/Obama takeover Chrysler, there's little denying Marchionne -a car guy if ever there was one- seems to know what Americans really want, with most of the profitable ones (inc. hugely successful SUVs) produced directly against the wishes of the Obama Administration.
Now this- the 2013 Dodge Dart is based upon the upscale (BMW-class) Alfa Romeo Guilieta, so under the skin is a highly-sophisticated design... not just another Neon or Caliber:
