Rock Oldies FREEDOM EDITION: Elton John

Sir Elton John is a bright, talented, and strange man who often says the oddest things... but who most consider an all-time great, obviously.  And if Elton John is still good enough for Rush... cool with me, I'll forgive him for what he said about Jesus, he's obviously a little confused- lol.  Elton earned a few + points for standing up for Arizona, anyway...

And while the 80s' Candle in the Wind might not be my cup of tea, Elton also did much great early stuff besides the mega-hits that we all love like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Daniel, Bennie and the Jets, Someone Saved my Life Tonight, Your Song, Rocket Man, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting ... i.e. his cover of the Stones' Honky Tonk Women, etc.

In 1975, Philadelphia Freedom was released by Elton John -as "Elton John Band"- as a single. The song was written by Elton John and longtime co-writer Bernie Taupin as a favor to Elton's friend, tennis star Billie Jean King: King was part of the Philadelphia Freedoms tennis team. Recorded in the summer of 1974, the only song Elton and Bernie ever consciously wrote as a single.  Taupin reportedly said, "I can't write a song about tennis"... and so he didn't. He also  maintains that the lyrics bear no relation to tennis, Philly Soul... or even flag-waving patriotism.

Nonetheless, his words have been interpreted as patriotic and uplifting, and even though released in 1975, the song's sentiment, intended or not, meshed perfectly with an American music audience already gearing up for the country's bicentennial celebration in July of the next year.

The song was also dedicated in part to the sound of Philadelphia, especially the music of the Delfonics, producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, and the Spinners and that group's producer, Thom Bell (and thus the Soul Train appearance)...

Google Poll-of-polls Election Forecast Map... and Other Fun Facts

Google Maps now has joined forces with RealClearPolitics, Cook, Rothenberg, et. al. to produce this useful midterm tracker as Americans prepare en mass to pound a stake in the heart of the ill-fated 'progressive' movement...

Lookin' good for the white hats... and grim for the White House:

Interestingly, Rasmussen reports that a majority of likely voters now say that any low-down congresscritter that voted for the multi-zillion-dollar bailouts, porkulus, and/or ObamaCare boondoggle ought not be re-elected... but rather frog-marched out of the capital building ASAP -here-

In another survey, The Hill reports a majority in key congressional battleground states feel Obama has either brought no 'change' to DC... or only a change for the worse -here-

Just a few weeks back, Dick Morris and Michael Barone were about the only ones daring to say a 100-seat Demplosion was within the realm of real possibility- with many warning against Republican overconfidence. But with just 12 days before election, a historical 3-figure shift is not only being discussed widely amongst us... but in Democratic circles as well, as they now observe -to  their abject horror- a Midwest meltdown unfolding right before their eyes... -here-

No wonder they're starting to freak out, like Steny Hoyer actually laying a sucker punch on his GOP opponent in Maryland Charles Lollar. Does this idiot Hoyer know Major Lollar is a Marine reservist...?  Talk about cruisin-for-a-bruisin... lucky for him Lollar's above it -here-

Sensing Weakness: China Putting the Screws to Us Already?

In the wake of a weekend Central Committee meeting, exports of vital rare earths to the US/EU -on which the Chinese maintain an unsettling stranglehold- are restrained

Ladies of the PLA: (Xinhua)

Perhaps it's more difficult these days to awaken Americans to the comprehensive threat posed by the rise of Communist China now that our own country's being run by a Smiley-Face Marxist who's actually to the left of Beijing's policies on health care, defense, and fiscal management... but there are increasing numbers of powerful Chinese leaders that see the United States as an enemy -no matter how socialist we are. They didn't get along with the Soviets either, you know lol.

And China's economic nationalists appear to be in the ascendancy...
China, which has been blocking shipments of crucial minerals to Japan for the last month, has now quietly halted some shipments of those materials to the United States and Europe, three industry officials said this week. China, which this week announced that it would cut its annual export quota for rare earths in 2011.

The Chinese action, involving rare earth minerals that are crucial to manufacturing many advanced products, seems certain to further intensify already rising trade and currency tensions with the West. Until recently, China typically sought quick and quiet accommodations on trade issues. But the interruption in rare earth supplies is the latest sign from Beijing that Chinese leaders are willing to use their growing economic muscle...

China mines 95 percent of the world’s rare earth elements, which have broad commercial and military applications, and are vital to the manufacture of products as diverse as cellphones, large wind turbines and guided missiles. Any curtailment of Chinese supplies of rare earths is likely to be greeted with alarm in Western capitals, particularly because Western companies are believed to keep much smaller stockpiles of rare earths than Japanese companies.

China experts said on Tuesday that Beijing’s assertive stance on rare earths might also signal the ascendance of economic nationalists, noting that the Central Committee of the Communist Party convened over the weekend...

The Chinese government office that oversees rare earth policy, which operated with considerable independence for many years, was moved early last year into the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. That ministry, formed only two years ago to draft plans for global leadership in many industries, has emerged as a bastion of economic nationalism.

The increasingly nationalistic tone eminating from the Peoples' Liberation Army offers yet more reason concern, as they too seem keen to exploit America's precarious economic position and lack of an effective Commander-in-Chief over the next 27 months. Why should they fear this smiley plastic mannequin anyway... any possiblity of that was lost forever in a ruinous first impression when he bowed to them just like the groveling milquetoast that he is:
Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates met his Chinese counterpart, Liang Guanglie, in Vietnam on Monday for the first time since the two militaries suspended talks with each other last winter, calling for the two countries to prevent “mistrust, miscalculations and mistakes.”

His message seemed directed mainly at officers like Lt. Cmdr. Tony Cao of the Chinese Navy. Days before Mr. Gates arrived in Asia, Commander Cao was aboard a frigate in the Yellow Sea, conducting China’s first war games with the Australian Navy, exercises to which, he noted pointedly, the Americans were not invited.

Nor are they likely to be, he told Australian journalists in slightly bent English, until “the United States stops selling the weapons to Taiwan and stopping spying us with the air or the surface.”

The Pentagon is worried that its increasingly tense relationship with the Chinese military owes itself in part to the rising leaders of Commander Cao’s generation, who, much more than the country’s military elders, view the United States as the enemy. Older Chinese officers remember a time, before the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 set relations back, when American and Chinese forces made common cause against the Soviet Union. The younger officers have known only an anti-American ideology, which casts the United States as bent on thwarting China’s rise...

Record Mexican Pot Bust Even Mas Grande than First Thought: now 134.2 tons/$428M

Sinaloa cartel exploiting Tijuana corridor "unimpeded"

Mexico's largest-ever seizure of marijuana packaged for sale is even bigger than the original estimate of 105 tons and probably belonged to the country's most powerful drug-trafficking cartel, authorities said Tuesday.

The Sinaloa cartel run by Mexico's most wanted fugitive, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, now is moving drugs through the Tijuana corridor "unimpeded," said a U.S. law enforcement official in Mexico, a possible reason why violence has dropped in the city across the border from San Diego, California, since a bloody peak in 2008...

Mexican soldiers and police grabbed the U.S.-bound marijuana in pre-dawn raids Monday in three neighborhoods when 11 people arrested after a shootout led authorities to the drugs. Army officials first said the drugs weighed 105 tons and had an estimated street value of 4.2 billion pesos, about $340 million. But authorities said the haul was even bigger Tuesday, counting 15,300 packages — 5,000 more than first announced... By comparison, U.S. authorities seized a total of 123 tons of marijuana during 2009 at all San Diego-area border crossings.

...marijuana cultivation is up in Mexico since 2005, more than doubling to 21.5 million metric tons in 2008. Marijuana seizures on the U.S. side of the border also have increased from about 1,000 to 1,500 metric tons between 2005 and 2009...

The Sinaloa cartel controls distribution in neighboring Sonora state and the city of Mexicali, only 120 miles east of Tijuana. It also controls areas to the east and is warring for control of the border city of Cuidad Juarez..

But nobody should be surprised that Mexico's most wanted fugitive now moves drugs into San Diego almost unchallenged by either government (except for yesterday lol) and/or rivals... yesterday the DHS itself admitted that over half the US-Mexican border -over 1000 miles- is not even under "effective control". Maybe someone should explain to 'Big Sis' Incompetano that opening-up most of the SW United States to drug smugglers isn't helping the Mexican government at-all.

And while a shaky Mexico struggles with these rich, powerful, and merciless gangs and their paramilitaries, Obama dozes... America's border is violated with impunity... and cartels feel free to send 15 assassins into Arizona to wipe-out anyone disrupts the distribution channels- at what point does all this officially qualify as an invasion?

Amusingly, the 15,300 bricks of weed confiscated in yesterday's record bust feature sytematic color-coding (by destination?) as well as professionally-produced labels, like this one with Homer Simpson and a Spanish double entendre meaning either:
"I'm going partying" or "I'm crossing illegally"... cute.

So chalk one up for the Federales, but sadly in a ongoing bloody civil war that's already produced 5x more casualties than the US suffered in Iraq...

Chechen Parliament Attacked by Gunmen: All Terrorists "Eliminated"

Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov

Reports are coming out of Grozny today of an early-morning terrorist attack on the Chechen Parliament building sure to be attributed to Muslim separatists as the Moscow-loyal government tries to keep an uneasy peace. After the medieval savagery of the Breslan school massacre, best expect anything from them.  And is their style, the Russian Interior Ministry reports all terrorists "eliminated"-

Police in Russia’s Chechnya have killed all the terrorists who attacked the republic’s parliament on Tuesday morning, an Interior Ministry official said.

The deputy head of the republic’s Interior Ministry, Roman Edilov, said four militants and two police officers had died during the operation. He also dismissed reports that the militants had taken hostages. The attack began when a vehicle carrying terrorists drove in with cars carrying lawmakers, a police source told RIA Novosti earlier.

He added that a suicide bomber had blown himself up while the other militants headed toward parliament. Parliament was evacuated and a special operation, headed by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, was launched to flush out the militants.

This is the second serious terrorist incident in Chechnya in recent months. In August, a suicide squad launched a massive attack on Kadyrov’s home village of Tsentroi.

Chechnya, which saw two brutal separatist wars in the 1990s and early 2000s, has seen relative calm in recent years under Kadyrov, a former militant turned Kremlin ally whom critics have accused of human rights abuses.

But while I -like most sane people- couldn't possibly have a lower opinion of any kind of terrorists, it's not like the Chechens living in rubble don't have legitimate grievances against the "leadership"... have you ever seen how Kadyrov lives
